Preparations are underway to begin supplying electricity from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant—the country’s first—to the national grid by this coming November. Plans are in place for both trial operations and the commencement of commercial power supply. Additionally, there is a plan to complete the loading of nuclear fuel into the plant’s second unit by June 2027.
This information was shared on Wednesday (October 14) during the first meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Science and Technology, held at the National Parliament House.
Providing an update on the project's progress, officials noted that the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is being constructed using advanced, modern third-generation technology. All project activities are being conducted in compliance with the safety standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to the officials, the project is proceeding according to the established plan under the supervision of international experts. The primary objectives are to ensure safety while also launching power generation on schedule.
The meeting also covered the expansion of nuclear medicine services at the district level and an initiative to construct the country’s first marine research vessel.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Science and Technology, Fakir Mahbub Anam, along with members of the parliamentary committee, the Ministry’s Secretary Md. Anwar Hossain, and other relevant officials.

The integration of electricity from Rooppur into the national grid will mark a new chapter in the use of nuclear energy within the country’s power generation system. However, the actual commencement of supply by the targeted date will depend on the successful completion of necessary tests and the receipt of required approvals.
The details from the meeting have been confirmed by reports from the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) and other media outlets. It should be noted, however, that the November timeline remains a target rather than a definitive announcement that operations will commence by then.
