Writ in High Court challenges validity of President's oath on dual citizenship issue

Published: 11:30 3 March 2026
A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking to declare Mohammad Shahabuddin's swearing-in as President illegal despite his dual citizenship. At the same time, the writ has also demanded an investigation into crimes against humanity against the President along with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, alleging their 'silent role' during the July coup.
The writ was filed in the relevant branch of the High Court on Monday (March 2). It is learnt that a double bench of the High Court may hold a hearing on the matter on Tuesday (March 3).
Earlier, on February 26, a legal notice was sent to the Parliament Secretariat and Law Secretary to remove President Md. Shahabuddin and take steps to appoint a new President as per the constitution. Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Shahriar sent the notice.
The next step in the matter will depend on the hearing of the writ and the court's further directions.
