On the occasion of the Great Victory Day, portraits of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani and July Uprising leader Sharif Osman Hadi have been hung at the demolished house of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital. This program has created new discussions in the political and social arena.
On Tuesday (December 16), in the early hours of the Great Victory Day, a victory rally was held in the capital under the leadership of Arif Sohel. After the rally, the participants went to Dhanmondi 32 and hung portraits in memory of leaders from various stages of the liberation war and mass movement. At that time, along with Maulana Bhashani and Sharif Osman Hadi, portraits of Sirajul Alam Khan, Siraj Sikder and Major Jalil were also displayed there.
Speaking at the program, Arif Sohel said that many leaders of the 1971 Liberation War and subsequent struggles have been systematically erased from history. Leaders like Maulana Bhashani, Siraj Sikder, Sirajul Alam Khan and Major Jalil played an important role in the people's liberation struggle, but their contributions have been hidden. Similarly, he commented that the name of Sharif Osman Hadi, who is at the forefront of the current democratic movement, is also being ignored.
Arif Sohel also said that through this program, the message has been given to return the Liberation War to the people from the exclusive ownership of any family or political party. In his words, 'The Liberation War of 1971 was not the property of any party or family; it was a people's war of farmers, workers, students and the common people.'
He accused the Awami League of keeping the Liberation War confined to party and family narratives for a long time. However, during the attack by the Pakistani forces, the common people spontaneously resisted and led the war to victory.
The organizers said that this program is not a symbolic event; rather, it is a political and cultural protest against the distorted presentation of history. They said that such programs will continue in the future to highlight the suppressed history of the Liberation War and the mass movement.
On Victory Day, the general public's interest in this program was noticed at Dhanmondi 32. Many are seeing it as an exceptional initiative to re-evaluate the history of the Liberation War.
