A heated situation arose at a civic meeting organized to recognize the martyrs and activists of the July Movement and plan for the future. When a commotion started among the participants while giving his speech, the government's Legal Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul expressed his anger. However, despite this situation, he made several important promises to recognize and commemorate the movement.
At the beginning of his speech, paying tribute to the sacrifices of the protesters, Asif Nazrul said, "The purpose of this meeting is to recognize the bravery with which you have stood against fascism. But if you behave like this, then it does not match that sacrifice."
He alleged that despite repeated demands for the preparation of a list of martyrs and injured, unwanted pressure and confusion are being created internally, which is disrupting the coordination of work. He said, “We have heard the plight of an activist who was imprisoned for eight years in a room smaller than a plane bathroom. He asked, how did Sheikh Hasina become such a monster, how did she carry out so many massacres?”
The legal advisor said that this inhumane repression policy was possible because many did not see Sheikh Hasina as a person but as a political entity called ‘seven murders forgiven’. He called for unity and human harmony to all present, saying, “During the July Movement, no one cared about anyone’s religion, party, financial status or identity. Everyone only knew that we are human beings. Let that human unity not be lost.”
He promised at the meeting that a list of martyrs and activists of the movement would be prepared and preserved in the ‘July Museum’. The government would support the process of oral history, books and documentation. The work of reforming the prison code would continue. The main responsibility would be to avoid the politics of division and protect the honor of the movement.
Many present at the event raised their hands in favor of the proposed reforms for the welfare of the prisoners. At one point in his speech, the legal advisor clearly stated, “We have limited time, but we will implement the promises we made—the list, the museum, and the documentation.”
Finally, Asif Nazrul concluded his speech with a message of solidarity and respect amidst the chaos. He made it clear that this work will not stop.
