The Interim Government's Legal Advisory Council has taken a sensational decision - from now on, legal action will be taken against those concerned even if they speak in favor of the Awami League on social media. Even if someone from outside the country posts or comments in support of the Awami League on Facebook or YouTube, a case can be filed against them.
On Monday morning, Labor and Employment and Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan said in a post on his verified Facebook page, "There is no escape if you conspire against the country! Even if you hold secret meetings, provocative processions or posts, legal action can be taken."
A poster was also shared with this post, where the heading was given - "Arrest if you speak in favor of the Awami League on Facebook-YouTube". The poster further states that if any individual or activist secretly participates in a procession, meeting or rally, the police of the concerned police station can take immediate action.
It has also been said that expressing opinions or support for the Awami League on social media will now be considered a punishable offense. Even if someone from outside the country is involved in such activities, he will be brought to justice under the Cyber Crime Act.
Earlier, at 11 pm on Saturday, an emergency meeting of the Advisory Council of the interim government took a historic decision - all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League have been banned.
The meeting was presided over by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. At a press conference after the meeting, Legal Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul said that the path to trial against the Awami League and its affiliates has been paved by approving the amendments to the International Crimes Tribunal.
He further said, "Until the Awami League's trial is completed, this ban is extremely important to maintain the country's security and sovereignty, the safety of July Movement activists, and the protection of the plaintiffs and witnesses of the International Crimes Tribunal."
It is worth noting that many see this decision as a "groundbreaking step" as a result of a long movement by students, civil society, and various political parties, while some question its strictness.
