Dhaka, February 10: BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said that if the proposals of the Reform Commission are an obstacle to fair elections, BNP will block them. He made these comments after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Bhaban in Agargaon in the capital on Sunday.

The BNP leader said that from their discussions with the Election Commission (EC), it seems that the commission will be ready to organize the parliamentary elections in May-June. However, the Election Commission does not yet have the power to set the election date, and it will be set at the request of the government. Tomorrow, the BNP party will meet with Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus to discuss the timing of the elections.

Nazrul Islam Khan also said that the powers of the Election Commission may be reduced due to some of the proposals of the Reform Commission and if they feel that these are obstacles to fair elections, BNP will block them. BNP will discuss this issue with the government and if the necessary laws and rules are changed, the Election Commission will comply with them.

He said, “Currently, the Election Commission is properly preparing for the elections and after preparing a complete voters’ list in May this year, it is possible to organize the elections.”

BNP leaders also said that 3 million new voters aged 18 and above will be added from January 1 and the voters’ list will be updated before the elections. This was their first meeting after the new Election Commission was formed under the leadership of retired secretary AMM Nasir Uddin last November.

Today, the BNP delegation will discuss the government’s position with Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus and inquire about the government’s roadmap. BNP hopes that the government will announce the elections soon with the necessary reforms.
