300 people charged with 9 murder cases in International Crimes Tribunal!

A complaint has been filed with the International Crimes Tribunal against 300 people in connection with 9 murder cases in the anti-discrimination student-public movement in Baniachang, Habiganj on August 5. Among the accused are former MPs, upazila chairman, former SPs and police officers, as well as Awami League leaders and activists.

The complaint was filed with the International Crimes Tribunal's Chief Prosecutor, Advocate Tajul Islam, on January 13.

According to sources, on August 5, 2024, students and the public erupted in protest in Baniachang, like all over the country, who took a stand against various irregularities, corruption and human rights violations by the government. To suppress their protest, the Awami League and leaders of various organizations held multiple processions and meetings and threatened the students and the public.

Finally, on August 5, a procession of 4-5 thousand students and public was attacked in Baniachong Upazila Sadar, resulting in 9 deaths and over a hundred injuries. Out of 300 people, 264 were named in the incident, leaving the rest unidentified, and a complaint was filed with the International Crimes Tribunal.

The accused include former MP Moyez Uddin Sharif Ruel, former MP Abdul Majid Khan, former MP Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon, former SP Akhter Hossain, former Additional Superintendent of Police Palash Ranjan Dey, former Upazila Chairman Iqbal Hossain Khan, former Upazila Chairman Abul Kashem Chowdhury, former OC Delwar Hossain, OC (Investigation) Abu Hanif, Upazila Awami League President Amir Hossain Master, General Secretary Md. Angur Mia, former Chairman Haidaruzzaman Khan Dhan Mia, police officials and Awami League leaders.
