Foods That Increase Uric Acid Levels: Know What to Avoid to Prevent Pain and Joint Problems

Published: 12:08 20 January 2026
Uric acid is not a permanent or lifelong disease; rather, it is mainly the result of an imbalanced lifestyle (life-style imbalance = জীবনযাপনের ভারসাম্যহীনতা) and unhealthy dietary habits (dietary habits = খাদ্যাভ্যাস). Irregular eating habits, insufficient water intake (insufficient = অপর্যাপ্ত), and lack of physical activity (physical activity = শারীরিক পরিশ্রম) are the three main reasons behind the increase of uric acid levels in the body. By maintaining a proper diet (proper diet = সঠিক খাদ্যাভ্যাস) and engaging in regular light exercise (light exercise = হালকা ব্যায়াম), this condition can be controlled quite easily.
At present, many people suffer from uric acid–related problems. When the level of uric acid in the blood increases (blood level = রক্তের মাত্রা), it can cause severe joint pain (joint pain = জয়েন্টের ব্যথা), swelling (swelling = ফোলাভাব), redness (redness = লালচে ভাব), and if neglected for a long time (neglected = অবহেলা করা), it may lead to complicated diseases such as gout (gout = গেঁটে বাত). Uric acid is produced in the body when a substance called purine (purine = পিউরিন), found in many foods, breaks down. Therefore, along with medication (medication = ওষুধ), the most important step in managing this condition is avoiding foods that are high in purine (high-purine foods = উচ্চ পিউরিনযুক্ত খাবার).
Red Meat and Organ Meat
For people suffering from uric acid problems, red meat is one of the most risky foods (risky = ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ). Mutton, beef, and other red meats contain a high amount of purine. In addition, organ meats such as liver (liver = কলিজা), brain (brain = মগজ), kidney (kidney = কিডনি), and heart contain even higher levels of purine. Regular consumption (consumption = নিয়মিত খাওয়া) of these foods can rapidly increase uric acid levels in the blood, especially causing severe pain in the toes (toes = পায়ের আঙুল), ankles (ankles = গোড়ালি), and knees (knees = হাঁটু).
Alcohol and Smoking
Alcohol makes uric acid problems more complicated (complicated = জটিল). It causes dehydration (dehydration = পানিশূন্যতা) and interferes with (interferes = বাধা সৃষ্টি করে) the natural process through which uric acid is removed from the body by the kidneys (kidneys = কিডনি). As a result, excess uric acid accumulates (accumulates = জমা হয়) in the blood and forms crystals (crystals = স্ফটিক) in the joints. Smoking also negatively affects (negatively affects = নেতিবাচক প্রভাব ফেলে) the body’s metabolic process (metabolic process = বিপাক প্রক্রিয়া), which can increase pain and inflammation (inflammation = প্রদাহ).
Sugary Drinks and Fructose-Rich Foods
Foods and drinks with excessive sugar (excessive = অতিরিক্ত) are extremely harmful for uric acid patients. Sweets, cakes, pastries, sugar-added tea and coffee, as well as soda, cold drinks, and packaged fruit juices contain a high amount of fructose (fructose = এক ধরনের প্রাকৃতিক চিনি). Research shows that fructose increases the rate of uric acid production (rate of production = উৎপাদনের হার) in the body. Regular intake (intake = গ্রহণ) of these beverages can increase pain and swelling.
Sea Fish and Certain Types of Fish
Although sea fish is generally healthy (generally = সাধারণভাবে), people suffering from uric acid problems should avoid certain types of fish. These include hilsa, shrimp (shrimp = চিংড়ি), sardine, mackerel, and tuna. These fish contain comparatively high amounts of purine (comparatively = তুলনামূলকভাবে). Instead, it is better to choose small river fish or low-purine fish such as rohu and catla.
Certain Vegetables and Lentils
Vegetables are usually beneficial (beneficial = উপকারী) for health, but some vegetables contain moderate levels of purine (moderate = মাঝারি). Spinach (spinach = পালংশাক), Malabar spinach (পুঁই শাক), cauliflower (ফুলকপি), and mushrooms may increase uric acid levels if consumed in excessive amounts. Similarly, consuming large quantities (large quantities = বেশি পরিমাণ) of lentils such as masoor dal and biuli dal can increase the risk of pain. However, these foods do not need to be completely avoided (completely avoided = সম্পূর্ণ বাদ দেওয়া)—moderate consumption (moderate consumption = পরিমিত পরিমাণে খাওয়া) is the safest option.
To keep uric acid under control (under control = নিয়ন্ত্রণে), special attention must be given to diet. Drinking enough water (enough water = পর্যাপ্ত পানি), avoiding high-purine foods, and engaging in regular light exercise—these three habits can significantly reduce (significantly = অনেকটাই) uric acid–related pain and complications (complications = জটিলতা).
