As the mild winter temperatures begin, the problem for many asthma sufferers increases. Symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, and wheezing in the chest become more severe in winter. Specific elements of the indoor and outdoor environment exacerbate this problem.

Dr. Stephen Canfield, an allergist and immunologist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, said that the cold and dry air of winter significantly increases asthma symptoms. Flu and respiratory infections also increase during this time.

Dr. Canfield added that four main factors affect the risk of asthma in winter:

Cold and dry air: Increases airway constriction, increases shortness of breath and cough.

Indoor allergens: House dust, pet hair, mold, etc. increase airway inflammation and worsen symptoms.

Infections: Flu and other respiratory infections are more common in winter, which increases asthma symptoms.

Asthma patients spend more time indoors: Exposure to dust and allergens during prolonged periods of time indoors can worsen symptoms.

Dr. Canfield advises that taking necessary treatment and precautions early in the winter can help prevent major complications. It is especially important to seek medical advice if you develop a new cough, increased mucus production, or a fever over 101 degrees Fahrenheit.

Top experts suggest that patients can also get through the winter normally if they keep their asthma under control.
