Kamchatka peninsula in the far eastern region of Russia was shaken by a strong earthquake of magnitude 7 on Sunday morning. A volcano became active after the earthquake hit. The country's state media reported that several miles of ash covered the sky after the eruption began.
This volcano, named Shiveluch, is located 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of the Kamchatka Peninsula. 1 lakh 80 thousand people live there.
Tass News reported, “Volcanic ash rose up to 8 kilometers above sea level. Besides, lava has flowed down from the volcano.”
Despite the strong earthquake, no major damage has been reported so far. However, the buildings there are being inspected to ascertain whether there has been any damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at a depth of 50 kilometers about 90 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky around 7 a.m. local time.
The US Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning after the earthquake. But later they said that this apprehension has passed. Local authorities have not issued any tsunami warnings.
Several aftershocks (smaller earthquakes) were felt after the big earthquake struck. But these were less intense.
The peninsula where the earthquake struck is an earthquake-prone area. It is located next to the 'Ring of Fire'. There are over a dozen active volcanoes.
