A groundbreaking change has taken place in the history of global electricity generation. In the first six months of this year, the amount of electricity generated from solar power, wind power, hydropower and other renewable sources has exceeded the amount of electricity generated from coal for the first time. This information has been given in the latest report by the UK-based energy think tank Amber.

According to the report, a total of 5,072 terawatts of electricity was generated from renewable sources in the world during the period from January 1 to June 30 of this year, while 4,896 terawatts of electricity was generated by burning coal. One thousand megawatt is considered one gigawatt and one thousand gigawatt is considered one terawatt of electricity.

According to analysts, these statistics indicate the beginning of a green revolution in the global electricity sector. This is because carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted from coal-fired power plants are one of the main causes of climate change and global warming.

In recent years, countries around the world have been trying to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and increase their use of renewable energy. Many countries have already invested heavily in solar and wind power projects.

“We are at a critical juncture in global power generation,” said Malgorzata Wiatros-Motyka, senior analyst at Amber. “The first six months of this year show that reliance on coal is falling faster than ever before, while renewable energy use is growing at an unprecedented rate. This is very positive news for the environment.”

The report also said that China and India are the largest contributors to renewable energy generation. The world’s two most populous countries were heavily dependent on coal and oil in the past, but in recent years they have been rapidly moving towards green energy.

In 2025, coal-fired power generation in China and India is expected to decline by 2 percent, while solar, wind and hydropower generation will increase by 43 percent and 16 percent, respectively.

In India, solar power has increased by 29 percent this year compared to last year, and electricity generation from wind power has increased by 31 percent.

However, the picture is opposite in the world's largest economy, the United States. In the first six months of 2025, coal-based electricity generation in the country increased by 17 percent, which is worrying according to experts.

Energy analysts say that the rise of renewable energy is not only for protecting the environment, but also for economic benefits in the long run. Because the production costs of solar and wind power are now much lower than before.

This progress in renewable energy worldwide proves that people are now more aware, technology is more advanced, and the future is moving towards greener and more sustainable energy.
