At a press conference in Kolkata, India on Friday, he said, "Last week, our National Security Advisor visited India and met with top officials. A large part of that meeting was a discussion about Bangladesh. How we can help Bangladesh, how the country can hold early elections, and ensure the security of all citizens there. We all want to see a stable, prosperous and tolerant Bangladesh."
Eric Garcetti also said, "The US and India can work more closely with each other."
The US ambassador noted, "Any political transition is difficult and will not always be positive, but if the rest of the world accepts it and sees that the US, India and Bangladesh have a lot in common, it can be a positive change."
In addition, he highlighted various aspects of US-India relations and said, "India is important to the US in many areas, from global warming, trade, the expansion of information technology and communication."
Garcetti added, "No democracy is perfect. It needs to be properly maintained, just like a house needs to be maintained."
Meanwhile, India-Bangladesh diplomatic relations have been strained since the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5 in Bangladesh. Diplomatic talks are underway to resolve the situation. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who visited Bangladesh on December 9, said, "Sheikh Hasina's position should not be an obstacle to the relationship between the two countries."
In addition, while India has spoken about the persecution of Hindus, such allegations have not been substantiated in Bangladesh. On October 31, Trump condemned the "barbaric violence" against minorities in Bangladesh and commented, "This would never have happened under his watch."
After such comments, the interim government in Bangladesh has become increasingly concerned, especially about the situation after Trump's inauguration as president on January 20.
