Satellite-based international internet service provider Starlink has officially launched its operations in Bangladesh. The company confirmed the matter over the phone on Monday (May 19) and officially announced it to the public in an announcement on the X (formerly Twitter) platform on Tuesday (May 20) morning.
Faiz Ahmed Tayyab, Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, said that Starlink representatives called him on Monday afternoon and informed him about the launch of their services in Bangladesh. The next morning, the company confirmed the matter on its official social media handle. He said that Starlink is initially launching its journey in Bangladesh with two packages - 'Starlink Residence' and 'Residence Lite'. The monthly costs of these packages have been set at Tk 6,000 and Tk 4,200 respectively.
However, to use these services, customers will have to buy a one-time setup equipment worth Tk 42,000. Notably, there is no data cap or speed limit for these services. Users can enjoy internet service with a maximum speed of 300 Mbps.
Faiz Ahmed Tayyab also said, “From today, customers in Bangladesh can order Starlink services. With this, the Chief Advisor’s expectation of starting the journey within 90 days has been successfully realized.” He said that although the cost of the service is relatively high, it will serve as an uninterrupted, reliable and sustainable high-speed internet service for the country’s premium customers. Especially, NGOs, freelancers and entrepreneurs in areas of the country that have not yet come under the scope of fiber connection or high-speed broadband internet will benefit significantly through this service.
He added that the Chief Advisor termed this initiative as a significant success and expressed his sincere thanks and congratulations to all concerned.
It is worth noting that Starlink entered a new market in South Asia by launching its service in Bangladesh. This opened up new possibilities for high-speed internet access even in remote and inaccessible areas of the country.
