A local BNP leader has been accused of obstructing the funeral and burial of a deceased person in Sanmandi Union of Sonargaon Upazila of Narayanganj for demanding payment of the money owed. The incident has sparked widespread discussion and criticism in the area.
The deceased Goljar Hossain was a resident of Goperbag area of the upazila and was a businessman by profession. After a long illness, he died on the afternoon of Eid-ul-Azha. Family members prepared for his burial according to religious customs and organized the funeral the next morning.
According to local sources, when Goljar Hossain's body was taken to the Moshurakanda Eidgah ground for the funeral at around 8 am on Friday, Sayem Pradhan, the organizing secretary of Sanmandi Union Ward No. 6 BNP, claimed that he owed the deceased Tk 136,000. It is alleged that he objected to the funeral and burial until he received assurances about the payment of the money. This postponed the funeral for some time.
Later, when the family members of the deceased assured to pay the due amount, the situation normalized and the funeral was conducted. According to eyewitnesses, hundreds of people attended the funeral and many expressed surprise and anger at such an incident.
Local resident Hazrat Mia said that such a situation surrounding the funeral of a deceased person is very sad. The incident has sparked widespread discussion in the area and many are commenting that it is undesirable.
Regarding the complaint, Sayem Pradhan said that he had business dealings with Golzar Hossain and had not been getting the due amount back for a long time. However, he claimed that the intention was not to stop the funeral; rather, a solution was sought for the matter. Later, when the family members assured to pay the amount within the stipulated time, the problem was resolved.
Meanwhile, Sonargaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Sarwar said that no one had officially reported the matter to the police. If a complaint was received, necessary action would have been taken as per the law.
Following the incident, there have been various discussions among locals about the issue from a social and moral perspective. Many believe that religious activities like funerals and burials should not be hindered even if there are family or financial disputes.
