1. Birth and Family Background
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman was born on 31 October 1958 in Bhatera Union of Kulaura Upazila, Moulvibazar District. His father’s name was Mohammad Abru Mia, and his mother’s name was Khatirun Nesa. He was born into a respected Muslim family and was the third among his siblings.
2. Childhood and Growing Up
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman was attentive to education from his childhood. Although he grew up in a village environment, he gradually developed himself through education, morality, and leadership. His childhood and family education later helped him move toward social service and politics.
3. Educational Life
He passed SSC from Barmachal High School in 1974. Later, he passed HSC from Sylhet MC College in 1976. After that, he earned his MBBS degree from Sylhet Medical College, now known as M.A.G. Osmani Medical College, in 1983. His medical education connected his life more deeply with humanitarian service and social welfare.

By profession, he is a physician. After completing his MBBS degree, he served people through medical care. Alongside politics, he has been involved in social service, educational institutions, hospitals, and humanitarian activities.
5. Entry into Student Politics
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman’s political life began during his student years. In 1973, he became involved in student politics through Jasad Chhatra League. Later, in 1977, he joined Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir. While studying at medical college, he performed various responsibilities in Islami Chhatra Shibir.
6. Entry into Jamaat-e-Islami Politics
In 1984, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. After that, he gradually performed important responsibilities at the Sylhet district, Sylhet metropolitan, and central levels. Because of his organizational skills and leadership, he became one of the important leaders of the party.
7. Important Political Responsibilities
In 1985, he became a member of Jamaat’s Central Majlis-e-Shura. Later, he served as Sylhet District Secretary, Sylhet District Nayeb-e-Ameer, Sylhet District Ameer, and Sylhet Metropolitan Ameer. In 2010, he became the Central Assistant Secretary General. In 2016, he was given the responsibility of Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami.
8. Becoming the Ameer of Jamaat
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman was elected Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in 2019. Since then, he has served in the highest leadership position of the party. Under his leadership, Jamaat-e-Islami has continued its organizational activities, political stance, and social work.
9. Family Life
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman married Dr. Amina Begum in 1985. Dr. Amina Begum was a Member of the 8th National Parliament. They have two daughters and one son. Members of his family are also involved in the medical and education professions.
10. Social Service and Public Welfare Activities
Alongside politics, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman is also involved in social service activities. He has been associated with educational institutions, medical institutions, orphanages, charitable hospitals, mosques, libraries, and various social initiatives. During his student life, he was also involved with a voluntary blood donation club at medical college.
