An attack on leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was reported in Indurkani upazila of Pirojpur District on Friday (21 February) around 9:00 pm. The incident took place near the Panchayet Bari bridge in the Bazar area of Pattashi Union. Officer-in-Charge of Indurkani Police Station, Md. Shamim Hawlader, confirmed the matter.
The injured individuals have been identified as Md. Nazrul Islam Fakir (55), a BNP leader and President of the Pattashi Union Jatiyatabadi Matsyajibi Dal; Zahid Hossain (38), Union President of the Swechchhasebak Dal; Md. Nahid Hossain (18); Nachir Uddin Fakir (50); and Naim Hossain (28).
According to local sources, around 9:30 pm residents heard screams and rushed to the scene, where they found the victims lying injured and bleeding. Two of them were reportedly unconscious. With the help of locals, the injured were given first aid at the Indurkani Health Complex and later sent to the district hospital for advanced treatment. All of them are currently undergoing treatment at the district hospital.
Injured Zahid Hossain and Nachir Uddin Fakir alleged that the attack was led by Nasir Uddin Tuku, Joint Secretary of Pattashi Union Awami League, along with his son Raihan, his brother and local Jubo League leader Alauddin, and 8–10 others. They claimed the attack was a political vendetta, as they are involved in BNP politics.
However, accused Nasir Uddin Tuku denied the allegations, stating that he had gone to stop a clash and was himself injured in the process. He described the allegation as false and politically motivated.
OC Shamim Hawlader said the victims are currently undergoing treatment at the district hospital. He added that if a written complaint is filed, legal action will be taken following an investigation.
