The Election Commission (EC) has declared the nomination paper of Eliza Zaman—the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate for the by-election to a reserved seat for women in the 13th National Parliament—to be valid. As there are no other candidates, she is on the path to being elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) uncontested.

This decision was announced on Tuesday (October 27) by Moin Uddin Khan, the returning officer for the by-election and a Joint Secretary at the Election Commission, following the scrutiny of nomination papers at the Election Commission building in the capital. According to the announced schedule, the deadline for the withdrawal of candidature is November 1. Once this period expires, a formal notification declaring Eliza Zaman elected is expected to be issued.

The seat became vacant following the resignation of the incumbent, Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti, on October 1. Her name had surfaced in connection with an incident involving an attack, looting, and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP health center in Mirpur. Reports indicate that she resigned following instructions from the BNP Chairperson, Tarique Rahman.

Eliza Zaman received the BNP’s nomination for the vacant seat. She is a member of the party’s National Executive Committee and serves as the first Joint Convener of the Pirojpur District BNP. Out of the 350 seats in the National Parliament, 50 are reserved for women. Based on the results of the 13th National Parliamentary election, 36 of these reserved seats were allocated to the BNP.
