Bangladesh in talks to buy J-10CE fighter jets from China, new momentum in defense cooperation

Discussions are reportedly underway to buy the state-of-the-art J-10CE multi-role fighter jets from China as part of Bangladesh's defense capability enhancement. Sources said that Bangladesh could acquire 24 fighter jets under the proposed purchase plan. Although the matter has not yet been formalized into a formal agreement, defense cooperation has gained importance in the recent diplomatic activities of the two countries.
Government sources say that several important discussions are expected to take place during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's ongoing visit to China on defense, investment, infrastructure, trade and strategic cooperation. The visit is being seen as a new chapter in Dhaka-Beijing relations. Issues such as military equipment, development projects and industrial investment are likely to be at the center of the discussions.
Discussions have been going on in the relevant circles for quite some time now regarding the proposed fighter jet purchase plan. Sources claim that Bangladesh is moving towards a final decision on buying the J-10CE fighter jets and major progress may be seen in this regard within this year. However, other issues including the contract schedule, financing method, supply chain and training are still under discussion.
The J-10CE is a modern multi-role fighter jet made in China. Defense analysts believe that it can be used in air defense, air-to-ground strike, surveillance and various strategic missions. If Bangladesh acquires this fighter jet, it can be a major addition to the modernization process of the air force.
Defense sources are quoted as saying that the potential cost of each fighter jet could be several hundred million US dollars. However, the cost of purchasing the aircraft alone is not the whole picture of the final cost. The total cost could be even higher when training, weapons systems, maintenance, spare parts, simulators, technical assistance and long-term operational support are included. Therefore, the actual package price will depend on the terms of the final contract.
Increasing the capacity of the air force has been a topic of discussion in Bangladesh's defense modernization plan for a long time. Considering the regional security situation, border security, maritime surveillance and the need for a rapid response defense system, the question of procuring a new generation of fighter aircraft has become even more important.
China is a long-standing defense partner of Bangladesh. Chinese equipment is present on various platforms of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. As a result, the discussion on purchasing new fighter aircraft can further deepen the military relations between the two countries. At the same time, it can also send a new message about the diversity of Bangladesh's defense equipment sources and strategic balance.
Not only defense, but also economic and infrastructure cooperation is gaining special importance during the visit to China. Diplomatic sources have informed that there is a possibility of signing multiple agreements, memorandums of understanding and joint declarations between the two countries. These agreements may include issues related to investment, industrialization, communication infrastructure, port development and river management.
It is also known that discussions may be held with China on the Teesta river management or barrage project. The Teesta issue has long been an important issue in Bangladesh's politics and diplomacy. As the possibility of Chinese cooperation in this project has come up for discussion again, the issue may also have an impact on regional diplomacy.
On the other hand, discussions are also underway on the modernization of Mongla Port and the establishment of a special economic zone there. The government is trying to attract foreign investment to make Mongla Port more efficient and trade-friendly. Those concerned believe that the creation of a special industrial zone for Chinese investors could create new opportunities in the manufacturing sector, exports and employment.
According to government officials, a large part of the country's economic priorities now revolve around job creation and industrialization. As a result of the changing global production system, many large companies are looking for new investment destinations. If Bangladesh can seize this opportunity, new possibilities may arise in manufacturing-based industries outside the garment sector.
However, this rapid development of Dhaka-Beijing relations carries special importance in regional politics. Diplomatic analysts believe that India in particular will closely monitor the issue. Bangladesh and India have important issues such as long borders, trade relations, security cooperation and sharing of water from common rivers. Therefore, a major defense or infrastructure agreement between Bangladesh and China could create new discussions in the geopolitics of South Asia.
Recently, some uncomfortable incidents and diplomatic tensions have also been discussed regarding Bangladesh-India. In this context, the current government is giving a message of pursuing a multi-faceted foreign policy. That is, Dhaka is trying to maintain balanced relations with important partners including China, the United States, Russia, and India, rather than relying on just one power.
According to foreign policy analysts, the biggest challenge for Bangladesh is to maintain a balance between development, trade, security, and regional relations. While increasing defense and investment relations with China can be important for economic and military capabilities, it is equally important to maintain stable relations with neighboring countries.
The potential J-10CE fighter jet deal with China is therefore not just a military purchase; it is also linked to Bangladesh's strategic position, defense plans, and future foreign policy direction. However, since a final decision has not been made,
