Bangladesh cancels defense contract with India

Published: 01:15 24 May 2025
Bangladesh has canceled a contract worth about 21 million US dollars (about 255 million taka in Bangladeshi currency) to build a tug boat with Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), a first-tier defense company based in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The news of the cancellation of the contract was published in several major Indian media outlets on Friday (May 23).
Background and content of the contract
In July 2023, representatives of this Kolkata-based defense company officially signed a contract to build a tug boat with high-ranking officials of the Bangladesh Navy. Under the contract, GRSE was responsible for building an 800-ton tug boat and handing it over to the Bangladesh Navy. This was the first major purchase order as part of the Line of Credit in the defense sector between Bangladesh and India.
Bangladesh received a $500 million defense loan from India in 2023, under which various infrastructure construction activities are being carried out. This loan cooperation was started from India especially during the tenure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and as a result, various infrastructure projects of Bangladesh have progressed.
Reasons and context of the cancellation of the agreement
Recently, India imposed a ban on the transportation of Bangladeshi manufactured goods and packaging materials through its land ports. In view of this, Bangladesh has decided to cancel this defense purchase order with the Indian company. According to information from the Indian media, the ban is mainly related to India's tense commercial competition with China and the geopolitical position of the Seven Sisters region of northeastern India.
Bangladesh's chief advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus had previously referred to India's Seven Sisters region as 'landlocked' and identified Bangladesh as the sole guardian of the sea. India banned the transportation of Bangladeshi goods through its land ports due to China's trade expansion proposal, which is being considered the main reason for the recent diplomatic tensions.
India's reaction and the company's position
India Today, an influential Indian media outlet, reported that Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, which operates under the Indian Ministry of Defense, has been dealt a major blow by the Bangladesh government's cancellation of the order.
According to NDTV sources, the company builds and maintains various types of ships for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. They recently informed the domestic capital market, "The Bangladesh government has canceled their order."
The Hindu Business Line reported that this decision was taken after mutual discussions between Bangladesh and the company.
Future relations and impact
This new issue in Bangladesh-India relations is being seen as a new chapter in the diplomatic and commercial conflict between the two countries. Bangladesh has been receiving large amounts of credit from India through lines of credit, and India's land ports are considered important trade routes for Bangladesh. But the recent ban and cancellation of the contract indicate distrust and political tension between the two countries.
Experts say that diplomatic dialogue and mutual cooperation are needed to deal with such disputes, so that in the long term, the friendly relations between the two countries are not damaged and cooperation in trade and defense continues.
