A six-month-old child was kidnapped in the East Naodoba area of Jazira upazila of Shariatpur over an interest money dispute. The child was rescued in a joint operation by RAB and police 48 hours after the incident.
Earlier, law enforcement agencies rescued the child from the Munshiganj area on Sunday night. The child was later handed over to his family. The kidnapping incident has created a sensation in the area.
According to local and family sources, the name of the kidnapped child is Zahid Rafsan. He is the son of Malaysian expatriate Jewel Mallick and Ratri Begum.
According to the family's complaint, Ratri Begum took a loan of four lakh taka on interest through her relative Amena Begum about two years ago. Although the money was later paid with interest, Amena Begum was demanding more money. There had been a dispute between the two families over this for a long time.
The victim's family claims that Amena Begum took the child away for some time on Saturday morning. Then she ran away with the child and later contacted him on his mobile phone and demanded another five lakh taka to return the child.
Later, on Sunday afternoon, when she was called away on a tip-off, she arrived at the designated place without the child. Later, when the police detained and interrogated her, the child was rescued with the help of RAB-8 based on the information given by her.
In this regard, the accused Amena Begum claimed that she had brought money from someone else, but she was being harassed because the money was not paid. She said that the child was taken away with the intention of collecting the money owed.
Shariatpur District Superintendent of Police Rawnak Jahan said that prompt action was taken in the kidnapping incident. The accused woman has been detained and after interrogation, the child was rescued and handed over to the family. Legal action is under process against her.
The incident has created widespread discussion in the area and locals have expressed concern over such a humanitarian crisis centered on a dispute over interest money.
