During the anti-government protests in Iran, some social media posts went viral claiming that Iranian police had detained Indian citizens or ISKCON members. However, on Sunday, Iranian Ambassador to India Mohammad Fatali dismissed the news as “fake”.
Mohammad Fatali wrote in a post on the X (formerly Twitter) account,
“The news spread by some foreign X accounts regarding developments in Iran is completely false. I urge all interested parties to get their news from reliable sources.”
This makes it clear that the news of Indian citizens or ISKCON members being detained during the anti-government protests in Iran is baseless.
Although this false news has gone viral, the reality is that protests and the government’s crackdown are ongoing in Iran. Human rights organizations and international media are reporting that many people have been injured and detained in the protests.
The Indian government has also issued a travel advisory. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said that Indian citizens should avoid unnecessary travel to Iran and be aware of the situation wherever they are.
