An unprecedented incident took place in the Supreme Court of India on Monday morning. A 71-year-old lawyer threw a shoe at Chief Justice B. R. Gavai during the court proceedings. Tension spread in the courtroom immediately. Later, security personnel quickly detained the lawyer and removed him from the courtroom.

Delhi Police said that the name of the detained lawyer is Rakesh Kishore. During the hearing in Court No. 1 at 11:35 am local time, he took off his sports shoe and threw it at the Chief Justice. Fortunately, the shoe did not hit the Chief Justice.

A senior police officer said, “The security personnel took quick action and detained the lawyer and handed him over to the Supreme Court Security Unit. He is a resident of Mayur Vihar area and is a registered member of the Supreme Court Bar Association.”

Preliminary investigation has revealed that Rakesh Kishor was angered by a remark made by the Chief Justice during the hearing of a case related to the reconstruction of a statue of 'Lord Vishnu' in the Khajuraho temple complex in Madhya Pradesh.

On September 16, Chief Justice Gavai, sitting on a bench with Justice K. Vinod Chandran, dismissed the petition and told the petitioner,

"This is a case made purely for publicity. You go and ask the deity to do something for you. If you are a devotee of Lord Vishnu, then pray and meditate."

It is believed that Rakesh Kishor was fuming with anger over this remark. Today, he expressed his anger in the court by throwing shoes.

However, after the incident, Chief Justice Gavai ordered the court to continue its proceedings calmly without showing any panic or reaction. Due to his restrained behavior, the atmosphere in the court quickly returned to normal.

According to the Delhi Police, the incident is currently under investigation. They are coordinating with the Registrar General of the Supreme Court to investigate the details of the incident and take necessary legal action.

Chief Justice B. R. Gavai has been given one of India's highest security cover, 'Z Plus'. His security is likely to be further enhanced after this incident.

The Indian legal community has called this incident a "rare and shameful chapter" in the history of the judiciary. Many have called it "extreme disrespect to the dignity of the judiciary and the court".

Later, Chief Justice Gavai responded,

"I believe in all religions, I respect all religions. The intention of my comments is not to hurt any religion, but to clarify the matter from a legal perspective."

Delhi Police said that an investigation is underway into Rakesh Kishor's mental state and motives. Security has also been ordered to be tightened in the court premises.

As soon as the incident spread, there was widespread discussion on social media. Some have criticized the lawyer's behavior as "contempt of the judiciary," while others have called it "an expression of public discontent with the judicial process."

No formal case has been filed so far. However, Delhi Police said they are taking the matter very seriously and additional security will be deployed in the court premises until the investigation is completed.
