21 people tragically died after drinking poisonous and adulterated liquor in Amritsar district of Punjab state, India. At least 10 more are undergoing treatment in various local hospitals in serious condition in the same incident. The influential Indian media Times of India reported this information on Tuesday (May 13).

The report said, citing the local administration, that the deaths occurred simultaneously in at least five villages in Amritsar. Initial investigation revealed that the victims had consumed a type of uncertified and illegal liquor called 'moonshine'. This liquor was mixed with toxic methanol, which is very dangerous for the human body.

The district administration informed that so far 21 bodies have been recovered from the scene and the surrounding area. In addition, 10 more people have been admitted to the hospital as their condition is critical.

Local police said that such cheap liquor, manufactured without authorization, has been operating in the market in the region for many years. It is mixed with lethal methanol to increase the level of intoxication. This chemical, if consumed in excess, can cause blindness, paralysis of body parts, and even death.

Punjab Police has already arrested 10 suspects. In addition, an investigation into the entire incident has been launched and it has been announced that all those involved, including the main mastermind, will be brought to justice.

After the incident, the administration has suspended Majitha Sub-Divisional DSP Amolak Singh and Station House Officer Avtar Singh for negligence of duty. They are accused of lack of vigilance and failure to stop the smuggling of liquor.

Punjab Inspector General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said that evidence has been found that the main accused in the incident, Saheb Singh, had collected methanol from a chemical factory in Ludhiana. It is believed that the methanol is used to manufacture illegal liquor.

Expressing deep grief over the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, "No one involved in this crime will be spared. The government will ensure speedy trial and strict punishment for the guilty."

It is to be noted that such tragic incidents have happened in various states of India before. Last year, at least 53 people died in Tamil Nadu after drinking a similar type of adulterated liquor called 'moonshine'. Yet, due to the lack of effective measures at the local level, fatal accidents are happening again and again.
