Elon Musk wants to buy OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and an investment firm led by him has sent an offer of $97.4 billion or 97.4 billion dollars. Musk's lawyer, Mark Toberoff, confirmed this information. The offer was sent to OpenAI's board last Monday, where it is demanded to buy 'all assets' of the company.
In response to the offer, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on social media X, "No thanks, but if you want, we can buy Twitter for $9.74 billion."
This new offer is considered another chapter in the long-standing dispute between Musk and Altman. They founded OpenAI together in 2015, but Musk left the company in 2018. Since then, tensions have arisen in their relationship. Altman is trying to turn OpenAI into a profitable company, but according to Musk, the main purpose of establishing OpenAI was to create AI for the benefit of humanity.
Meanwhile, OpenAI claims that it has no other choice but to transform into a profitable company to create advanced AI models. XAI and other investment institutions have also expressed support for Musk's proposal.
Elon Musk said in a statement, "Now is the time to turn OpenAI back into the open source and security-focused company that it once was. We will make sure of this."
Meanwhile, although OpenAI's market value was $157 billion in October 2024, its current value could be $300 billion, which is much higher than Musk's proposal.
Recently, US President Donald Trump announced the $500 billion 'Stargate Project' with OpenAI and SoftBank. However, Musk commented that the project 'does not actually have the money they promised to invest.'
It is thought that Elon Musk's proposal could be similar to Twitter's, where if OpenAI's board members agree to Musk's proposal, Altman may also have to sell OpenAI.
