The court has acquitted model and popular actress Mehzabeen Chowdhury and her brother Alishan Chowdhury in a case filed on charges of embezzling, threatening and intimidating Tk 2.7 million in the name of making them partners in a family business. Dhaka Executive Magistrate Md. Adnan Zulfikar issued the order on Monday (January 12) after hearing the long-discussed case.
Mehzabeen's lawyer Tuhin Hawlader confirmed the matter and said that the court acquitted the accused due to insufficient evidence to support the charges. Those concerned said that the court's decision has brought great relief to Mehzabeen and her family.
The complaint in the case stated that plaintiff Amirul Islam invested Tk 2.7 million after receiving an offer to become a partner in Mehzabeen's new family business based on a long-standing acquaintance. However, the complaint states that the accused kept wasting time when he asked for the money back as the business activities had not started even after a long time.
The complaint further states that on March 16 last year (2025), Mehjabeen, her brother and some unknown persons called her to a restaurant in Hatirjheel area and abused and threatened to kill her. Later, when she went to Bhatara police station, the police advised her to file a case in court.
Then Amirul Islam filed a case under Section 107/117(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code in the Dhaka Executive Magistrate's Court. According to court sources, the court issued an arrest warrant against the accused on November 10 as they did not appear in court on the scheduled date.
Later, on the evening of November 16, Mehjabeen and her brother surrendered through a lawyer in the court of Dhaka Executive Magistrate's Court-3, Judge Afroza Haque Tania and applied for bail. After the hearing, the court granted them bail.
Finally, after the hearing on Monday, the court acquitted Mehazabeen Chowdhury and Alishan Chowdhury from the case as the allegations in the case were not found to be true. The concerned quarters believe that this verdict has put an end to the long-standing legal complications.
