The legendary 'Bird of Songs' Sabina Yasmin of Bengali music turned 72 today. Born on this day in 1954, this artist is an immortal identity in the music world of Bangladesh. In her long musical career, she has sung about 10,000 songs, which are spread across every genre of film, patriotic songs, classical, folk songs and modern Bengali songs.
She has won 14 National Film Awards and 6 Bachsas Awards for her voice in films. The government awarded her the Ekushey Padak in 1984 and the Swadhinata Puraskar in 1996 for her outstanding contribution to the field of art.
Her journey as a child artist began in 1962 in the film Ehtesham's Notun Sur, and at the age of just 13, she became known as a playback singer by singing the song 'Madhur Jochna Deepali' in the film Agun Ne Khela. Later, she also lent her voice to the songs of the films Anwara, Nayantara, Taka Ana Pai and Jibon Te Neya composed by Altaf Mahmud.
Sabina Yasmin's melodies have captivated audiences both at home and abroad. She has traveled to many countries including England, Sweden, Norway, Hong Kong, America, Bahrain, and has gained international fame by singing in different languages. She has also acted in the movie Ulka.
Today, on her birthday, Bengali music lovers are paying tribute to an immortal melody that has been delighting generations after generations.
