The Chittagong University (CU) Alaol Hall principal has been accused of asking the newly elected Reading Room, Dining and Library editor of the hall assembly to fill the election manifesto with his own money. Protesting the incident, the editor bought 50 plates for the students at his own expense.
The accused principal in the complaint is Professor Dr. Muhammad Enamul Haque, a teacher in the university's Islamic Studies Department.
The victim hall editor, Shihabur Rahman, told More News that he went to meet the principal on Tuesday (October 21) afternoon and asked about the library chair.
Shihabur said,
“I told Sir that some chairs had come for the library before the elections, but they are no longer there. Then Sir told me, ‘Why don’t you ask at the office? Why are you asking so many questions?’ Even after I introduced myself, he got angry and said, ‘We will not fulfill your manifesto, do it with our own money.’”
He also said,
“I was surprised by Sir’s comment. So, to protest, I bought 50 plates with my own money and gave them for dining. I want to stand by the students as an elected representative.”
Regarding the complaint, the Provost Professor Dr. Enamul Haque denied the complaint and said,
“Compared to all the other halls, Alaol Hall has done the most development work—we have completed work worth about 4 million taka. But the students do not highlight these positive aspects. I also spoke to Shihabur, but I did not know which post he was elected to.”
He further added,
“The chairs had quality problems, so they were sent back. There were also some engineering defects. I come to the hall regularly, but not everyone may be present all the time.”
On the other hand, some residential students of Alaol Hall complained that the principal comes to the hall once a month or once every two months. Even though the students are facing various problems in the hall including water and WiFi, he does not keep a close eye on them.
Several students said that after the elections, they had hoped that the hall administration and the parliament would work together. But they are disappointed with the principal's behavior.
