Akbar Ali Set for Debut in Overseas Franchise League; to Play for Karnali Yaks

A new chapter is unfolding in the career of Akbar Ali, the captain who led Bangladesh to victory in the Under-19 World Cup. The wicketkeeper-batter has secured an opportunity to play in an overseas franchise T20 league for the first time. He will be seen wearing the jersey of Karnali Yaks in the third edition of the Nepal Premier League.

Karnali Yaks announced Akbar's signing in a somewhat novel manner. Instead of revealing his name immediately, the franchise hinted at the new foreign cricketer by sharing an image featuring the Under-19 World Cup trophy alongside batting and wicketkeeping gear. It was later confirmed that the player was indeed Bangladesh's Akbar Ali.

Akbar captained the team that brought the Under-19 World Cup title to Bangladesh in 2020, a tournament held in South Africa. His composed and responsible innings under pressure during the final against India remains one of the most memorable moments in the history of Bangladesh cricket.

Akbar has also demonstrated his capabilities in leadership and batting within the domestic cricket circuit. Under his captaincy, the Rangpur Division achieved success in the National Cricket League and the national T20 competition. Now, he has a fresh opportunity to prove himself in the realm of overseas franchise cricket.

A total of eight teams will participate in the third edition of the Nepal Premier League. According to the latest schedule announced by the Cricket Association of Nepal, the tournament is set to begin on October 26, with the final scheduled for November 21. The matches are planned to be held at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, Kathmandu.

Apart from Akbar, Shakib Al Hasan will be another major attraction from Bangladesh in this year's NPL. The Pokhara Avengers have signed the former Bangladesh captain and experienced all-rounder. Consequently, multiple Bangladeshi cricketers will be seen in action in this Nepali franchise league.

For Akbar—who gained distinct recognition in domestic cricket as the Under-19 World Cup-winning captain—this opportunity in the NPL could open new doors in the world of international franchise cricket. If he can perform well for Karnali Yaks, it will open up opportunities for him to play in other foreign leagues in the future.
