Amid uncertainty over Bangladesh's participation in the 2026 T20 World Cup and the match venue, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sent a letter to the International Cricket Council (ICC). In this letter, sent just a day before the final decision, Pakistan has expressed support for Bangladesh's position of not wanting to play on Indian soil. According to the ESPNcricinfo report, the PCB has sent a copy of the letter not only to the ICC, but also to other members of the ICC board.
Although various questions have been raised about the selection process during the PCB's move, Cricinfo does not see much possibility of the ICC changing its position. According to them, the ICC is still adamant on its decision. The organization has already informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) that the World Cup matches will be held as per the pre-scheduled schedule and there is no chance of Bangladesh playing in Sri Lanka as an alternative venue.
With the support of the Bangladesh government and the BCB, the Bangladesh team has refused to go to India to play the group stage matches. There have been several rounds of discussions between the ICC and the BCB on this issue. The latest meeting was held last weekend in Dhaka. However, no solution was reached in that meeting either. Both sides are adamant on their respective positions—the ICC is not willing to change the schedule, and the BCB says that it is not possible to send the team to India in the current situation.
The ICC had set Wednesday, January 21 as the deadline for a final decision. However, there are less than three weeks left for the start of the World Cup. As a result, the situation is becoming more complicated as the days go by and the uncertainty about the World Cup schedule is increasing.
Meanwhile, Pakistan's late participation has given rise to various rumors. Some unverified reports said that Pakistan may offer to host the match in Bangladesh. It is even heard that Pakistan itself will participate in the World Cup depending on the Bangladesh issue. However, the PCB has not yet commented publicly on these issues. They have not officially responded to ESPNcricinfo's questions.
The impasse began when the BCCI asked Kolkata Knight Riders to drop Mustafizur Rahman from the team for IPL 2026. Although the official reason for this was not given, the deterioration of political relations between Bangladesh and India is believed to have played a role behind it. Soon after, the Bangladesh government made it clear that the Bangladesh team would not travel to India to play their World Cup matches.
All in all, the three-pronged tension between Bangladesh's position, Pakistan's support and the ICC's intransigence has not yet ended the uncertainty surrounding the 2026 T20 World Cup.
