Mirza Fakhrul resigns from BNP Secretary General and Standing Committee posts

BNP has decided to nominate BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the party's candidate for the 23rd President of Bangladesh. After receiving the nomination for the presidency, he resigned from the party's Secretary General and Standing Committee member posts.
On Thursday (August 13), the decision to nominate Mirza Fakhrul for the presidency was taken at an emergency meeting of the party's top and senior leaders at the Secretariat, chaired by the Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.
After the meeting, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed the matter to reporters.
He said, "Mirza Fakhrul has resigned from the party's Secretary General and Standing Committee member posts after receiving the nomination for the presidency."
Decision in emergency meeting
The emergency meeting began at around 9 am on Thursday at the Secretariat, chaired by the Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. The top and senior leaders of the party participated in it.
The name of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was finalized as the BNP candidate for the upcoming presidential election in the meeting. He announced his decision to step down from the organizational post after receiving the nomination.
Presidential election on August 20
According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, the 23rd presidential election of the country is scheduled to be held on August 20.
The last day for submitting nomination papers for the presidential election is August 13. The scrutiny of nomination papers has been set for August 16 and the last time for withdrawing candidacy is August 18.
Who will be the next Secretary General of BNP?
If Mirza Fakhrul is elected President, the post of Secretary General of BNP will become vacant. As a result, discussions have already started on who will be the next Secretary General of the party.
The names of BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed are under discussion as possible Secretary Generals.
However, no official decision has yet been made on who will ultimately take over as the next Secretary General of BNP.
