Farida Yasmin Threatens Defamation Suit Against Amir Hamza

Farida Yasmin, a Member of Parliament (MP) representing a reserved seat for women, has protested against remarks made by Mufti Amir Hamza, the MP for the Kushtia-3 (Sadar) constituency. She alleges that Amir Hamza made unpleasant and disrespectful comments about her and the party's top leadership. She stated that she would file a defamation suit regarding the incident if granted permission by the party.

Farida Yasmin made these remarks on Tuesday afternoon (September 15) while speaking to local journalists at her residence in Bheramara, Kushtia.

She noted that just as Amir Hamza is an MP, she too holds the same status. Every public representative possesses their own dignity and honor. She remarked that speaking respectfully—especially towards women—is a matter of political etiquette and decency.

According to Farida Yasmin, there should be defined limits to the statements and conduct of public representatives. Society keeps a close watch on the behavior of elected officials; therefore, those in responsible positions ought to exercise restraint in their speech.

She alleged that Amir Hamza made comments regarding her and the party leadership that she considers insulting. While seeking appropriate redress for the matter, she indicated that her next course of action would depend on the party's decision.

Farida Yasmin stated that if the party grants permission, legal action would be taken, and a defamation suit might be filed against Amir Hamza.

Meanwhile, leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate organizations in Kushtia staged protests against Amir Hamza's remarks regarding Farida Yasmin. 'Broom processions' (a form of protest involving the carrying of brooms) were also held in various locations. Participants condemned the statement and demanded action against the MP in question.

Earlier, Amir Hamza had spoken at an exchange-of-views meeting organized by Jamaat-e-Islami in Daulatpur, Kushtia. During the event, he questioned the role of elected MPs in various government committees and administrative meetings.

In his speech, Amir Hamza alleged that other representatives were being included in certain administrative meetings while elected MPs were excluded. He expressed dissatisfaction regarding this issue, citing a specific meeting concerning the appointment of fertilizer dealers as an example.

He also questioned the inclusion of Farida Yasmin in that particular meeting. Following those remarks, political reactions ensued, and Farida Yasmin publicly voiced her protest.

The incident has sparked discussion within local politics in Kushtia. However, it is not yet certain whether any legal case has been filed regarding the matter.
