Ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliament election, the election heat has started to increase in Thakurgaon in the northern district. After the scrutiny of nomination papers held at the office of the District Returning Officer on Saturday (January 3) morning, the nomination papers of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir were declared valid. Returning Officer Ishrat Farzana made the announcement.
According to district administration sources, the nomination papers of not only Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir but also several other candidates have been validated in the Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary constituency. These include Jamaat-nominated candidate and former Chhatra Shibir president Delwar Hossain and Islami Andolan candidate Khademul Islam. As a result, the possibility of a three-way or multi-way contest has been created in this constituency, which has added additional tension to the voting field in the beginning.
According to the revised election schedule, December 29 was the last day for filing nominations. The nomination scrutiny process, which began on December 30 the next day, will continue until January 4, 2026. During this period, the documents of all candidates are being finally examined.
There will be an opportunity to appeal against the decision of the Returning Officer between January 5 and 9. The appeals submitted will be disposed of between January 10 and 18. After that, any candidate can withdraw his nomination by January 20. Finally, on January 21, the main phase of the election will begin with the publication of the final candidate list and allocation of symbols.
The election campaign will begin from January 22. The candidates will take to the field to present their positions to the voters from that day. The campaign will continue until 7:30 am on February 10. Then, voting will be held on February 12, when the final fate of the Thakurgaon-1 constituency will be determined through ballots.
Meanwhile, the news of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's nomination papers being declared valid has created an atmosphere of joy and enthusiasm among Thakurgaon district BNP leaders and activists. However, in the end, it will be the voters of Thakurgaon who will decide who will be crowned as the winner.
