The body of Awami League leader Ishaq Ali Khan Panna has been recovered from a pan barge in Meghalaya's Jayanthi Hills district near the India-Bangladesh border, Indian news media India reported. According to the report of the Indian media, the melted body of Awami League leader Ishaq Ali Khan Panna was found last Monday (August 26) evening, about one and a half kilometers from the border.
Meghalaya police identified Panna by looking at the passport. The body has been sent to Khalihariat Civil Hospital for further identification and processing, PTI quoted the district superintendent of police (SP) as saying.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, the influential leader of Pirojpur district Awami League Panna was in hiding, according to family sources. After the fall of the government, he tried to escape to India via Sylhet.
On the morning of August 26, Panna and a few others were reported to have crossed over to Meghalaya through Sylhet's Tamabil area. Around 6 am they reached a nearby hill.
There Panna started having severe breathing problems. He could not walk. He is believed to have died on the way.
Other reports suggested that Panna might have died while fleeing the Border Security Force (BSF) chase.
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. In 1994, he was the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Chhatra League. He was a member of the last district Awami League. In 2014, he was nominated by Awami League for Pirojpur-2 (Kaukhali-Bhandaria-Nesharabad) constituency. But he had to step down as the 14-party alliance vacated the seat.
