In an emotional speech to the nation, the Chief Advisor to the Interim Government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has announced that the 13th National Parliament Election will be held in February 2026. In this speech, he appealed to the countrymen to make this election peaceful, festive and a shining example of democracy.
Dr. Yunus said, “On behalf of the Interim Government, I will send a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, so that the Election Commission organizes the national election in February 2026, before the next Ramadan.”
He also said, “We want this election to be a milestone on the path to building a new Bangladesh. The government will provide all kinds of support to organize fair, free and peaceful elections.”
In his speech, he specifically mentioned that this election should not be just for political parties, but should become a democratic festival with the participation of every citizen of the country. With the spontaneous participation of voters, this will be a memorable election in the history of the country.
The Chief Advisor said that administrative and organizational preparations for the election will begin today (Wednesday). He said, “We are calling on people from all walks of life to mentally prepare for this grand event.”
In his speech, he also remembered the expatriate voters. He said, “This is the first time we want to ensure the voting rights of expatriate Bangladeshis. They are partners in our national development—their participation is essential.”
An important and emotional part of the speech was the tribute to the martyrs. He said, “I remember with deep respect those who were martyred on the July Uprising Day last year. Students, workers, women—all stood up against tyranny.”
He further said, “Their sacrifice has reawakened our independent and democratic spirit today. I express my gratitude to those who have become disabled and have lost their sight forever—on behalf of the nation.”
Finally, Dr. Yunus said, “Our goal is for the people of the country to have the opportunity to shape their own destiny and elect their own government. All of you will pray and cooperate on this path, so that together we can build a humane, just and dreamy Bangladesh.”
