Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus has described the 2024 flood as not a 'normal flood'. According to him, this flood was unexpected, exceptional and caused a massive humanitarian disaster.
He said these things at a program organized virtually at the Chief Advisor's office in Tejgaon in the capital on Wednesday (April 30) morning. The keys of houses were handed over to flood victims in Chittagong, Feni, Noakhali and Comilla districts at the program.
The Chief Advisor said, "The flood started right when we took charge of the government. At first, we did not realize that such a terrible flood could happen in this region. Not only was it exceptional, we also had no idea how deep an impact it would have on people's lives and livelihoods. We thought that maybe the water would recede soon. But in reality, it turned out that the situation is becoming more difficult."
He further said, “People lost everything during the floods. At that time, proposals were coming from various quarters that cash assistance should be provided to the affected people. But I did not agree to this proposal. Because if cash is given, it is difficult to ensure its proper use. Many people may not deserve it, but they will also get that money. Then the idea of building houses through the Ashrayan project came up. By doing the work through the army, we are sure that there will be no waste of money and the quality will be maintained.”
Professor Yunus said, “The work has been completed at only half the cost of the money allocated for the construction of houses. This is undoubtedly good news. Usually, additional expenditure is requested compared to the allocated money, but the opposite has happened here. This is a successful example of transparency and accountability.”
He said, “We are also satisfied with the quality of the houses. Many times, even though there is money, the construction is substandard. This time, that problem did not arise.”
The statement of the chief advisor highlighted the successful reflection of the current government’s humanitarian approach and realistic planning to deal with disasters.
