In Islam, supplication is not only a means of fulfilling spiritual needs, but it is also an important tool for seeking Allah’s help in worldly needs. One such short but profound supplication is:

“Allahumma inni as-aluka min fadliq.”
Meaning: “O Allah, I seek Your favor.”

Why is this supplication recited?

The hadith instructs to make separate supplications when entering and leaving the mosque. According to a hadith narrated in Sahih Muslim, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“When you enter the mosque, say: ‘Allahumma iftahli abwaba rahmatika’. And when leaving, say: ‘Allahumma inni as-aluka min fadliq.’” (Sahih Muslim, Kitabus Salat, Hadith: 713)

This is also mentioned in Abu Dawud (Sunan Abu Dawud, Kitabus Salat, Hadith: 465).

Explanation of the Hadith

Imam Nabawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When entering the mosque, one should pray for mercy because the mosque is a place of worship and forgiveness.

When leaving, one should pray for ‘fadl’ because the servant then returns to worldly activities where he needs sustenance, protection and blessings.

Imam Khattab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The word “fadl” does not only refer to material sustenance; rather, it includes all kinds of goodness—faith, knowledge, good health and a good social environment.

The meaning of this supplication

Balance between worship and the world: Mercy upon entering the mosque, and after leaving ‘Fadl’ – the balance between religion and worldliness is taught.

Sustenance and welfare are from Allah: Allah’s grace is very important along with hard work.

Short but profound: The welfare of all the needs of life is included in this short prayer.

Daily practice: Allah’s mercy flows every time it is time to enter and exit the mosque.

Impact in real life

Remembering this prayer when returning to worldly work after prayer, success in life is not possible without Allah’s grace.

When a servant seeks Allah’s mercy through worship and prays for Allah’s grace before entering worldly work, then every area of his life becomes related to Allah.

By including this prayer as part of our daily practice, our worship, work, livelihood and worldly and hereafter are all filled with Allah’s mercy and grace.
