Mamata refuses to resign, political crisis grows in West Bengal

West Bengal Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee has refused to step down as Chief Minister despite her defeat in the elections. An unprecedented constitutional and political crisis has arisen in the state's political arena due to her position.
Mamata Banerjee has clearly stated that she will not resign voluntarily. She has also commented that she should be dismissed if necessary. At the same time, the Trinamool leader has indicated that the day will be marked as a 'black day'.
She has blamed the Election Commission of India for her electoral defeat and alleged 'dirty play'. She has also announced that a 'black dress day' will be observed on the day the assembly opens to keep up the morale of party leaders and activists. In addition, a special committee has been formed to maintain party discipline.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who is being discussed as the possible next Chief Minister of West Bengal, has denied reports of major post-election violence. He assured strict action against the miscreants.
Constitutional questions have also come to the fore regarding the current situation in the state. According to legal experts, even though there is no specific procedure in the constitution for such a situation, the Governor can dismiss the Chief Minister if he wants, because the Chief Minister performs his duties based on the satisfaction of the Governor.
However, imposing President's rule is still considered an extreme measure. Experts also opine that the Governor can invite the winning party or alliance to form the government as an alternative.
With the term of the current assembly ending on May 7, there has been a demand from various quarters for a quick solution. Opposition leaders including the BJP have also demanded the removal of Mamata Banerjee.
