The United Arab Emirates has arrested 10 people on charges of spreading a missile attack video on social media amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. A Bangladeshi national is among those arrested.
The country's state news agency Emirates News Agency reported this information on Saturday (March 14). The report said that the accused published misleading and fake video clips on social media, which the authorities believe could pose a risk to national security and social stability.
The country's Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi has ordered the arrestees to be brought to justice quickly. The public prosecution has already begun questioning them and has ordered them to be kept in custody during the investigation.
The investigation revealed that the videos spread on social media show scenes of missiles being intercepted by air defense systems, missiles falling to the ground and panicked crowds. Some videos have been accused of using artificial intelligence to create fake scenes of explosions and attacks.
In addition, some videos have attempted to portray incidents that occurred abroad or attacks on military installations as incidents in the United Arab Emirates. The investigation has also revealed that some clips have even used children's emotions to create a sense of panic and security threat.
The UAE authorities have said that strict action will be taken against any attempt to spread false information or disrupt the country's security and social stability using digital platforms or modern technology.
Official information also said that the arrested people include citizens of various countries. Among them are one Egyptian, one Philippine, one Vietnamese, one Pakistani, one Iranian, one Bangladeshi, one Cameroonian, one Nepalese and two Indian citizens.
