Iran prepares for war, declares 82 metro stations as shelters

Amid the threat of a possible war with the United States, extensive security and safety preparations are being made in the Iranian capital Tehran. 82 metro stations across the city have been declared temporary shelters to protect civilians in any emergency. In addition, parking areas and various underground structures are also being prepared as safe shelters, Iran's crisis management authority said.
Ali Nasiri, head of the Tehran Crisis Management Organization, told the media on Saturday that work is underway to ensure food storage, first aid and other emergency facilities in these shelters. According to the plan, the capacity to shelter about 2.5 million people at once is being created if necessary. In his words, "This preparation is aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens in any unexpected situation."
Tensions between the United States and Iran have recently increased. In particular, former US President Donald Trump's announcement to send a large fleet to Iran has further strengthened the fear of war. In such a context, Tehran is not willing to take any risks and is on the highest alert.
It is worth noting that although the population of Tehran is generally estimated to be between 10 and 12 million, the greater metropolitan area has reached 15 to 16 million. During the 12-day direct military conflict between Iran and Israel in June last year, many residents of Tehran took refuge in metro stations for safety. Since that experience, initiatives have been taken to convert these facilities into more secure and effective shelters.
After that deadly conflict, bunker-like security measures have been strengthened in metro stations, parking facilities and other underground facilities in various parts of the country, including Tehran. Experts say that this is not only a preventive measure, but also a prepared framework for a long-term war situation.
Meanwhile, the Iranian government has also given a strong message. The country has clearly stated that any attack on Iran will be met with a very tough and strong response. As a result, analysts fear that tensions in Middle Eastern geopolitics will increase further.
