Denmark deploys more troops to Greenland amid Trump threat

Denmark has deployed more troops to the Arctic region as tensions rise in the wake of US President Donald Trump's open threat to take control of Greenland. A significant contingent led by the Chief of the Royal Danish Army, Peter Boysen, landed at Kangerlussuaq Airport in western Greenland on Monday evening (January 19). The move is seen as part of a move to strengthen regional security and a show of strategic force.
Denmark's public broadcaster TV2 reported that the newly sent 58 Danish soldiers will take part in an ongoing multinational military exercise called 'Operation Arctic Endurance'. Previously, about 60 soldiers were stationed in Greenland to participate in the same operation. As a result, the new deployment further strengthens the Danish military presence in the Arctic region.
However, there was no immediate official comment from the Danish Ministry of Defense or the Danish Armed Forces on the matter. However, international analysts say that although this deployment is merely part of a military exercise, its political significance is much deeper.
Notably, this Danish military deployment occurred within hours of Trump refusing to rule out the possibility of using military force if necessary to take control of a vast and mineral-rich Arctic region like Greenland. Trump claims that Greenland is very important to US national security.
Meanwhile, Denmark, while openly interested in discussing increasing the US military presence in Greenland, has made it clear that Greenland is not for sale. Danish officials have warned that any attempt to forcibly seize the island would deal a serious blow to the existence and unity of NATO.
Trump's stubborn stance on bringing Greenland under US control has already brought US-European relations to their lowest point in decades. At the same time, new concerns have arisen about the future of NATO. It is worth noting that both the United States and Denmark are important members of NATO's 32 member states.
In this tense context, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt on Monday. The meeting discussed in detail strengthening security in the Arctic region, establishing a joint NATO mission on Danish territory, and future strategic cooperation.
All in all, Trump's threat and the deployment of Danish troops indicate new tensions in international geopolitics surrounding Greenland, which could become a major test for NATO and the Western alliance in the coming days.
