The new tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump have taken effect from midnight today. As these tariffs apply to many countries worldwide, new tensions have arisen in global trade. Shortly before midnight, Trump announced on social media, "It's midnight!!! Now, billions of dollars in tariffs are flowing into the United States!"

In particular, higher tariffs have been imposed on countries that continue to import fuel oil from Russia. One of these is India, on which a 50 percent tariff will take effect from August 27 unless they stop importing from Russia. Delhi has declared this move as unfair, unjust and unreasonable and has announced to protect national interests.

On Wednesday, Trump also said that a 100 percent tariff will be imposed on computer chips made abroad. However, major investors such as South Korea's Samsung, SK Hynix and Taiwan's TSMC have been exempted for the time being.

Tariffs of up to 40 percent have been imposed on manufacturing-dependent countries such as Laos and Myanmar, which could deal a major blow to their economies. According to analysts, countries with close trade relations with China are mainly targeted by the move.

The United Kingdom, Japan and South Korea have already reached agreements with Washington, which will give them some relief. Brussels has agreed to a 15 percent tariff under a deal with the European Union, which will allow many European products to enter the US market at a lower cost.

Meanwhile, tariffs on Canada have been increased from 25 percent to 35 percent, accusing it of not cooperating in combating fentanyl and other drug trafficking. However, most Canadian products will remain exempt from these tariffs under the USMCA agreement.

New tariffs on Mexico have been suspended for 90 days due to ongoing negotiations. And Brazil has been imposed a 50 percent tariff. Trump has accused Brazilian President Lula da Silva of attacking US technology companies and has called the ongoing coup trial against former President Bolsonaro a political vendetta or a "witch hunt".

A 90-day tariff suspension with China expires on August 12. The two countries are planning to start talks before then.

Businesses around the world have shown mixed reactions to Trump's tariff policy. While some have expressed concern, many are deciding to increase investment in the US market. Apple has already announced a new investment plan of $100 billion in the United States.
