California Governor Gavin Newsom has allocated $50 million to protect California’s state policies from challenges by the Trump administration and to help immigrants in the face of the president’s massive deportation plan. He recently signed a law to this effect.
Under the law, $25 million has been allocated to the California Department of Justice to continue its legal battle against the federal government. The remaining $25 million has been set aside to help legal groups fight potential deportations of immigrants.
During Trump’s first presidency, the state of California filed multiple lawsuits against his administration, including climate law, water policy, and immigrant rights. California has filed more than 100 lawsuits, and now those battles have resumed.
“Californians are facing an administration that disregards the Constitution and believes in the limits of its power,” Democratic Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said in a statement. “That’s why we are introducing legislation that will protect Californians from this urgent threat.”
The move comes after Governor Newsom’s recent trip to Washington, where he met with Trump and members of Congress to discuss federal disaster assistance for the devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area. The fires have killed more than two dozen people and destroyed much of the state.
Last month, Newsom signed a $2.5 billion wildfire relief package that will help the state respond to the disaster. It includes funds for shelter, evacuations, and hazardous waste removal. The Newsom administration hopes the federal government will reimburse the state for these costs.
California is accustomed to suing the Trump administration. The state filed more than 120 lawsuits during its first term, and spent about $42 million on these legal battles, ranging from $2 million to $13 million per year.
