Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai arrived in Pakistan on Saturday to attend an international conference. Malala, who came to attend the two-day conference on women's education in the Islamic world, said she was "overwhelmed" and "delighted" to return home.
Malala was taken to the UK for treatment after being seriously injured by Taliban militants in 2012. Since then, she has mainly lived in the UK and has been working on women's education rights. She has rarely returned to Pakistan due to the risk of death.
Malala, who arrived in Islamabad with her parents on Saturday to attend the conference, said, "I feel very honored to be back in Pakistan."
Representatives from various Muslim-majority countries are attending the conference. Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif also spoke. Malala is scheduled to give a speech on Sunday, where she will discuss women's education rights in Afghanistan.
"I want to emphasize the education of Afghan women," Malala said. Afghanistan is the only country where women are banned from attending schools and universities. She added that she would also talk about holding Taliban leaders accountable for violating women's rights.
Pakistan's Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said they had invited the Afghan Taliban administration to the conference but had not received a response.
The Pakistani Taliban and the Afghan Taliban are separate groups, but they have close ties and both have a negative view of women's education.
