The UK has imposed new sanctions on Iran and Russia. The ban was imposed over issues related to Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. This news was reported by the news agency AFP, quoting the British media "The Guardian".
The Guardian reports that the sanctions have been imposed on an Iranian airline and a shipping group and the Russian ship Port Olia-3.
Russia has been fighting with Ukraine for more than two and a half years. And the countries of the western world, including the United States, are helping Ukraine in that fight. In addition, the West has been imposing sanctions on Russia one after another since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022.
Of course, they have imposed sanctions not only on Russia, but also on various institutions and organizations of other countries for allegedly supporting Moscow. One of them is Iran, one of Russia's closest allies.
The British Foreign Office said in a statement that Iran's state-owned airlines and Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines will have their assets seized for their role in supplying Russia with weapons for its war against Ukraine.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said, "Russia's efforts to undermine global security are dangerous and unacceptable, and I reiterate my call on Iran to stop supporting Russia's illegal war in Ukraine."
The statement also said that Russian cargo ship Port Olea-3 was also sanctioned for its role in transporting military equipment to Russia.
In February 2022, the Russian military launched an all-out attack on Ukraine. Since then, around 12,000 civilians have been killed in this Eastern European country. In this two-and-a-half-year-long war, Russian forces have partially occupied four provinces of Ukraine: Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia.
The combined area of the Russian-occupied parts of these four provinces is one-fifth of the total territory of Ukraine. In addition, last Friday, Russian forces also made progress in the eastern front.
