The government has taken several initiatives to revive Bengal's traditional Jatra parades and circuses. From now on, it has been decided to give initial permission directly from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs to sustain these arts, which have been lagging behind due to various crises and administrative complications for a long time. As a result, it is expected that administrative harassment of Jatra groups and circus-related people will be reduced.
Minister of Culture Nitai Roy Chowdhury gave this information at the closing ceremony of a workshop on improving the quality of Jatra art organized by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. He said that there is a plan to bring Jatra art back to the people through state sponsorship. However, he also warned that no obscene or negative activities will be tolerated in the name of culture.
State Minister for Culture Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayyam said at the ceremony that Jatra art must be modernized in line with the times. If innovations are introduced in the style of speaking, stage management, musical instruments and presentation, this medium will also gain acceptance among the younger generation. At the same time, emphasis was placed on creating new productions based on social, historical and mythological stories to maintain the tradition of rural culture.
The artists, artists and Jatra group owners who participated in the workshop demanded financial security, improved working environment and risk allowance for the artists. The Shilpakala Academy informed that in light of the government guidelines, nationwide activities will be further strengthened to improve the quality of life of Jatra artists and to highlight this disappearing tradition to the new generation.
