The soul of Tarash Upazila—Chalanbil, an endless treasure trove of natural beauty and biodiversity

Taradash Upazila of Sirajganj district is like a work of art painted by nature. Chalanbil—one of the largest wetlands in Bangladesh—flows through its heart. The combination of these two forms, the horizon-wide body of water during the rainy season and the greenery during the dry season, has made Chalanbil a symbol of unique natural beauty.

Chalanbil is basically a collection of several small beels, which are spread across the floodplains of the Atrai, Baral, Gumani, and Karatoya rivers. Tarash Upazila is an important part of this vast beel area. During the rainy season, there is only water and water around—then the villages that are awake in the middle of the beel look like islands. When viewed from a distance, it seems as if small islands are floating in the bosom of a vast ocean.

This Chalanbil, rich in biodiversity, is one of the sources of life and livelihood of the local people. This region is famous for its many species of native fish—shol, gazal, taki, magur, shing, pabda, boal, and many more. Even many species of fish that are almost extinct can still be found here, which has earned it the reputation as a significant fishery in the country.

The beauty of Chalanbil is not limited to fish only—it is also a paradise for bird lovers. When winter comes, thousands of migratory birds fly to this bel area. The sky and air of the bel are filled with the chirping of various species of native and guest birds, including sandpipers, cranes, pankauri, and bucks, coming from distant Siberia and the foothills of the Himalayas. During this time, Chalanbil comes alive in a meeting of nature and life.

Chalanbil is very important for the local people not only naturally, but also economically. When the water level of the bel decreases during the dry season, rice, wheat, mustard, corn, and various vegetables are cultivated in the fertile alluvial soil. As a result, the livelihood of the people of Tarash has been built around these two seasonal cycles - fishing in the rainy season and agriculture in the dry season.

Chalanbil also has huge tourism potential. Traveling by boat along the beel during the rainy season is a unique experience. The view of sunrise in the morning or sunset in the afternoon captivates any traveler. Cycling or walking along the banks of the beel in the dry season is no less enjoyable.

However, this beauty is now under threat. Due to unplanned dam construction, siltation, encroachment and pollution, the natural balance of Chalanbil is being destroyed. As a result, the biodiversity of the beel is rapidly decreasing. Therefore, sustainable conservation measures and environmentally friendly development plans are needed now to save Chalanbil through government and private initiatives.

Chalanbil, which is formed by a combination of nature, life and tradition, is a unique asset not only of Tarash Upazila but also of the entire North Bengal. If cared for and protected, this lake could become one of the gems of natural tourism in Bangladesh.
