A large part of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Udaynagar BOP established on the border has been submerged in the river due to the erosion of the Padma River in Daulatpur, Kushtia. Two-thirds of the Udaynagar BOP collapsed and went into the river on Wednesday night.
Lieutenant Colonel Mahbub Murshed Rahman, commander of the 47th BGB Battalion in Kushtia, told Prothom Alo that all BGB members and necessary equipment were moved to the nearby Char Chilmari BOP before the erosion. As a result, major damage was avoided. Patrol activities are being continued from Char Chilmari to Udaynagar area.
The Water Development Board (PAUBO) said that three months ago, the risk of erosion was identified at 17 places in the Padma-Garai River. This year, the erosion has intensified due to the increase in water. An attempt to protect the Udaynagar BOP by throwing geobags failed.
BGB sources said that there were 22 to 25 members in this BOP. Although most of this strategically important structure has been submerged in the river, the remaining part may collapse within a few days.
Rashidur Rahman, executive engineer of the PAUBO Kushtia office, said that erosion is becoming more intense due to the receding water level. Erosion has also been observed in several other places in Daulatpur and Bheramara.
