The first cold of the season has descended on Panchagarh, the northernmost district of the country. On Tuesday (November 11) morning, the temperature in Tentulia upazila was recorded at 14.5 degrees Celsius, which is the lowest temperature of the season so far, according to the local meteorological office.
The sky in Tentulia is covered in dense fog in the early morning. Dewdrops accumulate on the leaves of trees, paddy fields and vegetables, as if nature is telling us that winter has arrived. Even though the sun shines as the morning progresses, the feeling of cold is clearly felt in the icy air.
Jitendranath Roy, officer-in-charge of the Tentulia Meteorological Observatory, said, “The temperature was recorded at 9 am at 14.5 degrees Celsius. The humidity of the air was about 78 percent. The night temperature is decreasing further due to the hilly air and clear sky.”
He also said that the temperature in Tentulia will continue to decrease from mid-November to the first week of December. As a result, the intensity of the cold is expected to increase in the coming days.
According to locals, for the past few days, people have been unable to stay without blankets wrapped around their bodies in the morning and night. Children and the elderly are especially feeling the effects of the cold. Tea garden workers are also finding it difficult to start work in the morning fog and cold wind.
Local farmers in Panchagarh said that due to the decrease in temperature, this is a favorable time for cultivating Rabi crops such as mustard, wheat and potatoes. However, if there is excessive fog, there is a risk of crop damage.
Meanwhile, the temperature has increased to about 30 degrees Celsius as the day progresses from morning. As a result, people's lifestyle has changed due to the varied weather conditions such as cold in the morning and afternoon and hot in the sun in the afternoon.
According to sources from the Meteorological Department, this year winter has started to descend a little earlier than usual. There is a possibility of mild to moderate cold wave in the northern regions towards the end of December.
