BUET Admission Test Set for January 16; Applications Open November 21

Published: 10:54 8 November 2026
The admission test for the first-year undergraduate program at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) for the 2026-27 academic year has been scheduled for January 16, 2027. Online applications for the test will begin on November 21, 2026. The university authorities have decided to proceed with the admission process according to the previously established schedule.
On Saturday (November 7), Professor Kamrul Hasan of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering—who also heads the BUET Admission Test Committee—confirmed this information. He stated that the university is currently preparing to conduct the examination on January 16.
No Changes to Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for admission to BUET will remain the same as in the previous academic year; the university authorities have no plans to relax these requirements.
According to the criteria set for the previous academic year, applicants must have secured a minimum GPA of 4.00 in the SSC (or equivalent) examination from the Science group. Additionally, they must have achieved a GPA of 5.00 in the HSC (or equivalent) examination, with a separate GPA of 5.00 in each of the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Higher Mathematics.
Professor Kamrul Hasan noted that a maximum of 10,000 students will be permitted to take the admission test. However, given the current eligibility criteria, the number of potential applicants exceeds 18,000. Consequently, if the number of applicants surpasses the set limit, students will be shortlisted based on their initial academic qualifications.
Decision Remains Unchanged Despite HSC Results
Following a decline in both the pass rate and the number of students achieving a GPA-5 in this year’s HSC (and equivalent) examinations, there was speculation among students regarding whether the BUET admission eligibility criteria might be relaxed.
However, the university authorities have stated that, due to limited seating capacity and logistical constraints for the admission test, they see no reason to alter the existing eligibility requirements.
Application Deadline to be Announced Later
While applications for the 2026-27 academic year at BUET will open on November 21, the final date for submitting online applications—along with other details regarding the admission process—will be announced in a subsequent notification. Therefore, prospective students are advised to follow the university's official notification regarding the application start date, eligibility criteria, and further instructions.
