South Africa's 26-year-old opener Matthew Britzke scored a brilliant century in the tri-nation series held in Pakistan. He played an innings of 150 runs on his ODI debut, which created a stir in the cricket world. The 148-ball innings was decorated with 11 fours and five sixes.
With this feat, he became the 19th batsman in history to score a century on debut. However, this innings makes Matthew Britz special, because he is the first cricketer to score an innings of 150 runs on his debut match in international ODI cricket. With this feat, he broke a 47-year-old record. The first century on debut in ODI cricket came in 1972, but later in 1978, West Indies' DL Hynes scored 148 runs against Australia.
The next batsmen failed to cross the 130-run mark, but this time Matthew Britz took him to that mark. He became the fourth South African batsman to score a century on ODI debut. Earlier, Ingram, Temba Bavuma, and Reza Hendricks achieved the feat.
Britz's brilliant innings helped South Africa post a first-innings total of 304 for 4 against New Zealand. Jason Smith scored 41 off 51 balls and pace all-rounder Wan Mulder scored 64 off 60 balls. Although South Africa's score was a bit low considering the Lahore wicket, Britz's batting was impressive.
